Screening & Vetting

What is pre-employment screening?

Pre-employment screening is a procedure in which all of the applicant's information is compiled with the objective of determining their suitability for the role. This process takes place from the beginning of the application and ends when a recruiting choice has been made. During that time the following are assessed:

  • Relevant skills and abilities
  • Personality traits and cultural fit
  • Facts outlined on their resume

Pre-employment screening gives you peace of mind that you've chosen the best applicant for the position when the offer is made.”

What are the benefits of using pre-employment screening?

There are many reasons why running a pre- employment screening is a good idea:

  1. It is very easy for opinion and bias to enter the interview process; pre- employment helps prevent this.
  2. When conducting a screening and vetting assessment, an objective set of criteria is used to assess each candidate. This is in stark contrast to resume considerations and interviews, which directly factor in the personal opinions of the person doing the interview.
  3. Lower Staff Turnover - research indicates that companies that administer pre- employment screening enjoy a lower rate of staff turnover compared to those that don’t.
  4. Organisational Health - Bad hires can diminish morale and reduce productivity within the company. Thorough pre-employment screening helps you make the right hire and reduce the turnover rate.
Why do employers need pre-employment screening?

There are a few good reasons to always conduct pre-employment screening:

  1. To avoid wasting time in recruiting a person with no relevant skills that is a poor fit for the position being advertised.
  2. To avoid recruiting a person that is disruptive to the existing corporate culture.
  3. To avoid hiring a person that lied on their resume. It isn’t a secret that some candidates over exaggerate their achievements and accreditations.
What does pre employment screening include?

These may vary from client to client depending on which parts of the journey you are looking to outsource to First4Freelancers. Below is a rough outline:

  • Initial on paper screening. This corresponds to the employer reading through the candidates resume to assess whether they are a good fit and have the right qualifications on paper.
  • Phone and video screening. After reading through the individuals resume we will conduct a brief phone call or video meeting with the candidate. This will allow us to assess the candidates suitability across a wide range of criteria including but not limited to education history, communication skills and personality.
  • In-person screening. We view this as an opportunity to learn more about an individual than we possibly could over a phone call. The aim is to understand more about their experiences and circumstances with additional considerations being given to their communication skills and academic achievements.
  • Background checks. This is when the legal fit of the candidate for the position in question is assessed. This will often include a criminal background check, unspent convictions, driving violations, health and education checks.
  • Reference checks. It is important to get feedback about an individual from the perspective of someone who has interacted with them in a professional capacity as this can help highlight inconsistencies and character flaws that would disqualify the person from being the right one for the position in question.
What does the vetting process look like in your office?

The vetting process can be split into three main parts, namely: Information Gathering, Information Analysis and Decision.

During the Information Gathering stage all the relevant information about the candidate is gathered into one place pending analysis. This includes their resume, right to work, criminal history, education documents, terrorist list, sanctions list, company officer appointments, five year career history, financial public records and social media.

During the Information Analysis the relevant information is analysed to make sure that the skills on the resume match those that will be required for the role, that the candidate possesses the relevant right to work documents, their criminal history is examined, their education documents are scanned for grades and attestations achieved, their absence from terror and sanction lists is checked, whether they were shareholders or directors of companies and the nature of those companies is validated, their financial records are examined and social media is scanned.

During the Decision part of the process the information analysed during the Information Analysis part of the process is assigned a relative weight and the decision as to the candidates suitability is reached.

Which types of security checks can you help us with?

We can help with the following security checks:

  1. Right to work
  2. Employment history
  3. Academic credentials
  4. Criminal records
  5. Character
  6. Public Financial records
  7. Licenses and certifications
  8. Credit reports
  9. Social media assessment
What happens with all the information you collect on me?

All information and documents are stored on a secure online portal. We use the documents and information you provide to perform employment reference checks and credit checks. This information is kept indefinitely pending the withdrawal of consent to do so by the candidate.

Is security vetting just for companies or can individuals use it too?

The service is sold to companies for their new hires, however, we can provide this service to individuals as well.

What is your pricing structure for screening and vetting services?

Our BS:7858 2019 vetting service is £70 + VAT per person.

What is the BS7858:2019 Standard code?

The BS7858:2019 Standard is the code of practice released by BSI (British Standards Institution) which details best practices and guidelines for the screening of individuals.

It is the background screening (vetting) of individuals employed in an environment where the security and safety of people, goods or property is a requirement of the employing organisation and/or where such security screening is in the public and/or corporate interest.
